“What’s a Yurt,” you ask?
A Yurt is a small, environmentally sustainable dwelling. It looks like a round tent, and is built to withstand all types of weather. It comes complete with living, kitchen, sleeping, and bathing areas. Have you seen Tree House Masters on Animal Planet? It’s like that, but in an on-the-ground-tent form.
However, if you did want one built up into the tress, that could easily be done as well.
A Yurt can be used as a permanent home or a vacation spot, and they come in a variety of sizes, based on your needs. Companies are buying several yurts, placing them on campgrounds in forests, mountain ranges, deserts, or along beaches and then renting them out.
This quote from a Yert owner describes it best:
“The yurt is a place to escape the daily routine and live simply, connected to your surroundings. Our yurt is a gathering place, for friends and family, a place to share stories and make memories. A place we long to go to and hate to leave.”
The company is called the Colorado Yurt Company, and there are already Yurts all over the country, as well as in Mexico and Canada. I discovered them because they recently won Green America‘s People & Planet Award for Winter 2016. The company says the award will help them improve the sustainability footprint of the materials it uses as it provides low impact, leave-no-trace, do-it-yourself structures to its customers.
They actually look like nice, cozy places to live.
Though they’re small, I can’t imagine spending a ton of time inside. I think that’s the point of a Yert — to only be inside when you need it. It gives you a safe protected place to sleep and eat. I would only actually be inside of one during the day for any length of time if the weather was bad. And then, I would snuggle up by that stove and read.
I think I could live in a Yurt. Could you?
